All About Kick Scooters

kick scooter is a man-powered scooter propelled by a rider pushing off the ground. Kick scooters made for younger children have 3 to 4 wheels, while kick scooters for older kids to adults have 2 wheels. A kick scooter is not to be confused with a motorized or electric scooter. To be clear, a kick scooter is moved along by a human’s kick on the pavement, while a motor or electric scooter is powered by an engine.

Kick scooters are used for play, but many adults use them as a commuting vehicle.

Whether you’re looking for a fantastic ride for tricks and games at the skatepark, or merely an easy way to commute from point A to point B, a kick scooter is the way to go.

For fun and practicality, choosing a kick scooter can be a tricky task. There are many kick scooters for you to choose from so finding the perfect one for you requires plenty of research and comparisons between the top brands. The perfect kick scooter for you or your kid is out there, but how do you find it?

The best kick scooters are light (8-10 pounds max), built to last (solid overall build quality), made with quality aluminum and backed up by a friendly warranty. Keep in mind, the important things to review in deciding on a kick scooter are (source):

  • Wheel size (bigger is faster and more comfortable)
  • Bearing quality and grade (name brand kick scooters have better bearings)
  • Deck size (bigger is easier and more comfortable)
  • Deck height (the lower the deck the easier it is)
  • Folding mechanism (a good folding mechanism is a must for commuting, but it’s not a big deal if you are just playing around and storing it in the garage)
  • The suspension (suspension is better for commuting but worse for playing around)
  • Brakes (bike style brakes are nice to have, but not required in most scenarios)
  • Accessories (consider things like kickstands and lights/reflectors)

Top 5 Best Kick Scooters Reviewed

Each of the kick scooters on our list has been tried and tested against industry standards in order to decide whether they’re worth your time or not. The following scooters were the five best we tested and quickly rose to the top of our recommendations list. We tried to keep the list diverse so that you could see different variations as well as different age options for anyone looking to buy for themselves as well as their young scooter star

1. Razor A5 Lux Kick Scooter (The Most Popular Scooter)

There’s nothing like the name brand of scooters. When you think of a kick scooter, you’re likely picturing the classic silver Razor scooter with the foot grip and the black handlebars. They’ve made a name for themselves with tons of high-quality scooters that consistently out-perform their competitors. Their mid-range A5 Lux model is no different with its slick design and lightweight feel. This scooter is built for adults and rides like no other. Many people agree that A5 Lux is the perfect, if not the best, daily kick scooter perfect for the road.

Overview

The wheels (poly tires) are designed to provide a smooth ride and a comfortable experience. They utilize large, urethane wheels that handle the changing surfaces with ease. Other scooters use the smaller compact wheels, but those tend to feel every bump and can throw off your path. The T-tube – made from aluminum – is easily adjustable and can accommodate taller riders. Even the soft-foam grip of the handles is designed to provide comfort to riders.

Our Thoughts

Razor is the name brand scooter developer for a reason. Their A5 Lux model is an accumulation of the best features of all their top products and enables riders of all sizes to hop back on their favorite kick scooter. The aluminum build keeps the scooter light and enables tricks while being sturdy enough to support commutes. If you’re looking for a commuting scooter that can also toss out some tricks, then the Razor A5 Lux is the perfect scooter for you.

Pros

  • Larger, urethane wheels
  • Adjustable T-tube for taller riders
  • Nice folding Mechanism
  • Aluminum build offers a lightweight feel to the scooter
  • Perfect for commuting and tricks

Cons

  • Nuts sometimes come loose
  • Smaller deck (20.6″)

2. ENKEEO Kick Scooter for Adults (Value for Grown-Ups)

Similar in design to the Razor A5 Lux, this scooter looks to employ a sleeker, darker feel for its riders at a more affordable price. This jet black scooter is a fantastic choice for any adults looking to return to their scooter days or upgrade their toys. Much like the Razor, this product uses aluminum as its main metal for a sturdy build, but a lightweight feel. This is another product that can accommodate a long commute, but also works wonders at the skatepark.

Overview

This the value scooter on this list. The 200mm commuter scooter wheels are padded with a durable PU so that you don’t have to feel every bump in the road. This helps alleviate stress on both your body and the scooter as the wheels absorb the bumps and diverts it from rocking through the scooter. The deck of the scooter has been redesigned from previous models to provide an anti-slip feel for riders. You can adjust the neck to fit your size, making this scooter perfect for almost all ages.

Our Thoughts

The feel of this scooter was quite smooth and offered users a fantastic ride. While the Razor scooter wins out in performance, this lower-priced scooter was especially great at bump-absorbing. Even on the roughest of roads, we rarely felt the shake of the neck that is all too common from other scooters. The PU padding on these wheels worked wonders and promoted a quality commute regardless of the road conditions. As light as the Razor with even better wheels, ENKEEO offers users an incredible kick scooter option.

Pros

  • Anti-slip deck
  • PU padding on wheels offers bump absorption
  • Hard wheels
  • Lightweight and adjustable

Cons

  • Folding mechanism can get caught sometimes
  • Foot break
  • Feels cheaper than the Razer

3. Jetson Jupiter Kick Scooter (Very Affordable, for Kids)

Easily one of the coolest kick scooters we’ve seen, the Jetson Jupiter is built to make everyone who uses it the envy of the park. It is a fun and funky little toy. What kid wouldn’t love this thing? Unfortunately for adults, this is a kid-oriented kick scooter as it’s weight and height capacity is much lower than devices like the Razor A5 Lux or the ENKEEO Kick Scooter. This scooter comes with an exciting body of lights that flash and change colors, making it stand out from the rest, no matter where you go. This is usually a $30 dollar scooter on Amazon, so it is very affordable.

Overview

With over 100 LED lights throughout the stem, deck, and wheels, it will be impossible not to see this scooter while you’re out. Not only does that lend itself to the cool design of the product, but it also enables drivers to see the scooter and stay away at night when other scooters become hard to spot. This keeps your kids safe and prevents collisions with oncoming people. This scooter also grows with your child as the adjustable stem will continue to rise as their height does.

Our Thoughts

This is the perfect scooter for your younger kids (5-8), and we recommend it to anyone looking to give thosekids a fun start on a kick scooter. This scooter is so cheap there won’t be any big regrets if your kids don’t take to it. Jetson designed this bike to keep your kids safe while disguising the safety features under the guise of colorful LED lights that adorn the whole scooter. On top of safety, this scooter, despite its cheap price, will be long-lasting as it grows with your kids and stays their scooter of choice. Your kids will love it, and parents will appreciate the added features designed with the safety and growth of the riders in mind.

Pros

  • Very inexpensive
  • Over 100 bright and colorful LED lights
  • Grows with your kids with an adjustable stem
  • Lightweight and easy to transport
  • Value makes it one of the best scooters for kids

Cons

  • The battery sockets can be too big for the batteries
  • Slight bumps can knock the batteries out
  • Feels cheap

Swagtron K8 Titan (Value Commuter Scooter)

For any adults looking for a slick and speedy way to commute from point A to point B, there is no better option than the official scooter of the Chicago Cubs. An interesting selling point, but one that does lend an air of trust to the Swagtron company. Swagtron designed this commuter scooter for adults and have created one of the best commuter scooters in 2023. From strength to design, this scooter is built to last and look good the whole time you’re using it.

Overview

There are two different designs – the K8 and the K9 scooter. The main difference between these two is the size of the wheels they have – 200mm and 250mm respectively. These wheels offer a quality shock absorption that keeps your ride smooth and fast. It’s easy to fold up and store this scooter with the simple fold and lock mechanism. The handles are designed like that of a bike and offer the support of the strongest scooters available.

Our Thoughts

Throughout reviews by customers and by the company themselves, we found many statements comparing them to Razor which we felt was rather accurate. Their design is similar to Razor scooters, but in terms of a purely commute focused scooter, Swagtron takes first place which is why we feel that they are the best adult scooter on our list. They aren’t great for skateparks and tricks like Razor or ENKEEO, but their feel and smooth ride is perfect for any commute.

Pros

  • Big 200-250mm wheels are perfect for shock-absorbing on rough roads
  • Low-price
  • Handles offer sturdy support
  • Comes with a bell
  • mid-range bearings

Cons

  • Back bolts can be compromised
  • Cheap foam grips

5. Mongoose Rise (Best Freestyle Scooter)

The perfect mixture of an adult scooter and a youth one, this scooter will bridge the gap for any kids too old for the Jetson, but too young for the Swagtron. The extended alloy deck of the Mongoose Rise offers more space for movement while on the scooter and the grip lining prevents slipping encountered on previous models. For kids 8+, this scooter is a magical addition to the industry and is the perfect in-between for your growing scooter star.

Overview

This scooter is designed to keep you riding for longer with a MaxGrip deck and break so that you don’t slip off, regardless of the situation. The alloy metals used to build this scooter offer a strong frame, paired with a lightweight feel so that you can take this scooter to the skate park and have a smooth ride while commuting. The 110mm wheels offer a great amount of shock absorption so that the rider isn’t rattled to the point of no return by the end of the ride.

Our Thoughts

While this might not be the best in any of the categories we looked for in a scooter, it certainly was the most dependable and the most fun. It is the lightest weight adult kick scooter, yet it doesnt lack in any features and offered a smooth, yet sturdy ride the whole time we tested it out, despite the fact this is not a “commuter scooter”/ Our only real issue with it was the smaller wheels which weren’t as solid in shock protection as other scooters. That means this scooter isn’t as good on the rough roads as scooters with bigger wheels.

Get this scooter if your preteen or teen plans on doing some fun on the sidewalk and a little bit of commuting to school.

Pros

  • Fully covered MaxGrip deck
  • Perfect for kids 8+ and young adults
  • Sturdy and dependable
  • Cool color options

Cons

  • Smaller wheels weren’t as great at shock absorption
  • Some people had issues with broken parts after a few months

Choosing the Right Kick Scooter For You

There are a few important factors that should be considered when choosing a kick scooter. Firstly, the intended use of the scooter will change which type is best suited for you. If you’re more of a trick rider, then a lighter scooter with better spinning might be the best choice for your ride. If you’re using the scooter as a form of commuting, then the distance between work and home will be important to note. Longer commutes require stronger scooters.

Your best bet is to go with the granddaddy: the Razer A5 Luxe (#1 above)

The age of the person who will be riding the scooter is also an important factor to consider. While the Jetson Jupiter might have some sick lights lining its whole body and neck, it’s built for ages 6-12 and won’t be a good fit for adults. The opposite is true for the Razor A5 Lux – it has that slick silver design that kids might long for, but it’s built for adults and therefore won’t work well for younger kids. The Mongoose, however, will be perfect for that in between stages.

Choosing the perfect scooter is all about you. We’ve picked five of the best kick scooters available in 2023 and any of them will be a perfect match for you. Look through their features and see what each product has to offer. Your top kick scooter is all about what features suit you best.
